The Oireachtas Committee on Future Funding of Water, on which sits Kildare South Fine Gael TD, Martin Heydon, agreed that households should be able to get more water leaks fixed before having to pay for the repairs.

They've agreed to reconsider the so-called 'first fix free' scheme where Irish Water covers the cost of the first repairs.

The committee debating the future of water charges has also abandoned plans to make water meters mandatory in all new builds.

However the broader questions about the structure of possible water charges have been parked until the committee receives more legal advice.
