Countdown to Cheltenham Is On & The Champions League Resumes Tonight

: 03/13/2018 - 12:57

The countdown's underway for the 2017 Cheltenham Festival, with testing ground and a significant non runner ahead of todays Champion Hurdle.

Faugheen is back to try and regain his Champion Hurdle crown today as he takes on defending champion Buveur D'Air in the feature race on day one of the 2018 Cheltenham Festival. The Champion Hurdle is due off at 3.30.

So impressive when making all in the race in 2015, Faugheen has not looked the force of old recently but he in unbeaten at Cheltenham and Ruby Walsh is back on board so stranger things have happened.

The Irish have a really strong hand in the Racing Post Arkle (2.10) as hot favourite Foodpad, unbeaten over fences, and Petit Mouchoir renew rivalry in what is one of the most mouth-watering clashes of the week.

The festival kicks off in familiar fashion - a hot favourite trained by Willie Mullins, owned by Rich Ricci  and ridden by Ruby Walsh.

Plenty of Irish punters will be praying that Getabird continues his winning spree in the opening Supreme Novices' Hurdle (1.30).

Apple's Jade is the new queen of Cheltenham and she returns to defend her OLBG Mares Hurdle crown (4.10) for Gordon Elliott and Jack Kennedy.

***Kfm will preview and review every race across the four days, firstly on Kildare Today each morning at 10.45, with bookmaker Daragh Fitzpatrick.

Then, when racing action begins, Paul Power will preview and review every race.

Manchester United must score at Old Trafford tonight, to reach the quarter finals of the Champions League.

They host Seville in the second leg of their last 16 encounter, with the tie at nil all.

Roma host Shaktar Donetsk in the Stadio Olimpico.

The Italians lost the first leg 2-1.

Mark Hughes is said to be the leading candidate to take over at Southampton.

The Saints are looking for a new manager after sacking Mauricio Pellegrino last night.

Southampton lie just one point above the relegation zone, having won just once in 17 top flight games.

The Irish Rugby team has stepped up preparations for Saturday's Grand Slam tilt against England at Twickenham.

Joe Schmidt's squad have resumed training, after being given yesterday off as a reward for their Six Nations title winning victory over Scotland.

Ireland have reported a clean bill of health, with Cian Healy due to train fully this week, despite suffering a stinger shoulder injury during the game against the Scots.
