Listen: Taoiseach To Spend The Weekend In Mayo, Considering His Future.

: 02/17/2017 - 17:06

The Taoiseach is to spend the weekend in Mayo considering his future as Fine Gael leader.

Pressure is mounting on him to outline a plan for his departure within days, or face a motion of no confidence in him at Wednesday's meeting of the parliamentary party, of which Kildare South's Martin Heydon is chair.

Another backbencher has called for him to go, but one of the leading contenders to take the job, Simon Coveney, appears to be giving Enda Kenny time and space.

Here's our political correspondent, Páraic Gallagher:

Dublin Fingal deputy Alan Farrell's become the latest backbencher to call on the Taoiseach to go.

No great surprise as he's in the same constituency as party deputy leader and Kenny loyalist, Senator James Reilly.

Ministers have spent the day talking down the prospects of a heave within days.

One of the contenders, Simon Coveney told Ocean FM, nothing was imminent and the Taoiseach wouldn't be rushed:

Two ministers - Pachal Donohoe and Charlie Flanagan ruled themselves out of any leadership bid.

Tonight Enda Kenny returns to Mayo and will spend the weekend deciding whether to put up a fight, or call it a day, possibly gettig a 12 week goodbye.
