New figures suggest most people can't afford to own a home until they're over 35.
According to the Census - home ownership is at its lowest level since 1971 - while there were over 180 thousand vacant dwellings - more than half of those are in urban areas.
Just 8,800 homes were built over the past five years - compared with more than 225 thousand between 2006 and 2011.
The number of vacant houses in Kildare has fallen to 4,712 - down from 6,311 in 2011.
