Naas Councillor Leaves Sinn Fein, Claims Party Environment In Kildare Is "Hostile"

: 04/21/2017 - 09:31

A Naas councillor has this morning confirmed that she is resigning from Sinn Fein, claiming the party environment in Kildare is "a very hostile and toxic place".

In a statement issued to Kfm, Cllr Sorcha O'Neill claims four additional members of the Wolfe Tone Cumann in Naas are also leaving, and a further two members have withdrawn from local structures but will remain as card carrying members of the party.

Councillor O'Neill added that she "loves Sinn Fein and will continue to fight for an Ireland of equals, but the party environment in Kildare is a very hostile and toxic place to work in.

"We will not continue to allow the members in Naas to be bullied, disrespected and undermined by a select few members in Kildare."

Councillor O'Neill was first elected to Kildare County Council in 2014.

Naas Councillor and several party members leave Sinn Féin in Kildare

Local County Councillor for the Naas Municipal District Sorcha O'Neill has this morning confirmed that she is resigning from the Sinn Féin party. Sources have also confirmed that four additional members of the Wolfe Tone cumann in Naas are also leaving. A further two members have withdrawn from local structures but will remain as card carrying members of the party. Making it a total of seven members leaving the party in the area. Some of the resigning members have been in the party for over 30 years.

Councillor O'Neill stated "I love Sinn Fein and will continue to fight for an Ireland of equals but the party environment in Kildare is a very hostile and toxic place to work in. It is a very sad day for me and the others that have chosen to leave as well but we will not continue to allow the members in Naas to be bullied, disrespected and undermined by a select few members in Kildare. "

Councillor O'Neill was first elected to Kildare County Council in 2014 with a short run up to the election with a successful poll of 1622 first preference votes on the first count. Her total votes were the highest of her party counterparts in Kildare and was only succeeded in Naas by James Lawless TD who was also running in the local elections at the time. The 2014 local election was a landmark win for Sinn Féin with the first member of its party elected in the Naas area since 1916, 2 years short of 100 years in the former garrison town.

Is mise le meas,

Sorcha O'Neill
