Listen: 50% Increase In Univerisity Population Putting Institutions Under Strain.

The 50 per cent increase in student numbers since 2000 is putting an "intolerable strain" on universities.

Around 4,484 people in Kildare are attending university.

A new report commissioned by the Irish Universities Association, of which Maynooth University is a member, has found greater funding is needed so third level institutions can cope.

The study also finds Irish universities are worth almost 9 billion euro to the economy each year and employ over 20 thousand people.

President of DCU and Chair of the IUA, Professor Brian MacCraith says it shows that society benefits from the work done by the 7 higher education institutions:
