McIlroy had been the joint leader after the opening round, but his second round of 71 has seen him drop back slightly.
Meanwhile in Florida, Cavan's Leona Maguire is six shots off the lead after two rounds at the Drive On Championship.
A second-round 71 moved Maguire to four-under-par.
