Fuel excise clearances for unleaded petrol were over 45 per cent lower in February, compared to the same month last year.
The CSO say the figure indicates a very substantial decrease in car traffic by households, as a result of current Covid restrictions.
The clearance volume, at 42 million litres, is similar to the low levels that were experienced during lockdown in April and May last year.
