
An online archive is being launched today that shows how the state supported the running of the Magdalene Laundries.
Thousands of Irish women were incarcerated in the institutions with little chance of escape.
The new database contains thousands of searchable documents including the testimonies of many of the survivors.
The project is a collaboration between Justice for Magdalenes Research and Waterford Institute of Technology.
Dr Jennifer O’Mahoney says the archive demonstrates how the laundries operated quite openly:
