The Garda divisions in Cork city, Limerick, Galway, Dublin South Central, Meath and Westmeath are to be the first to implement a new restructured policing model.
The change is part of a new operating model announced in August which will see a reorganisation of the force from six garda regions to four.
In this process, Kildare will cease to be a stand-alone division, and will be joined with Laois and Offaly.
The divisional HQ will be in Portlaoise.
Impact assessments are to be be conducted in each of the areas to see what needs to be done.
It's hoped the new policing plan will free up more Gardai for frontline services.
