The Garda Commissioner say five areas where the new policing model is being put in place will mean a more responsive and better service.
Galway, Cork city, Dublin south central, Limerick and Meath/Westmeath will be the first to be affected by the restructure.
It aims to reduce the number of divisions from 28 to 19 and lead to more frontline officers and a better use of resources.
In this process, Kildare will cease to be a stand-alone division, and will be joined with Laois and Offaly.
The divisional HQ will be in Portlaoise.
The merging of Meath/Westmeath means the two counties will be overseen by one chief superintendent.
