Listen: Kildare Principals Warn Parents Will End Up Footing More Of The Cost For Primary School Education.

: 06/14/2018 - 12:43

Kildare parents will end up footing the bill unless there is profound reform of the way in which schools are funded.

On average, 52% of the costs of running a primary school are met by parents and through fundraising and other means.

The Capitation Grant allocated by the Dept. of Education amounts to 92 cent per child, per day, is intended to cover all day-to-day costs incurred in primary education.

The grant was cut by 10% during the recession

Many Newbridge area principals hosted a meeting with South Kildare TDs to drive home the crisis in funding.

Bryan O'Reilly is Patron's Secretary for Education at the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin.

He's been speaking to Kildare Today.
