The Department of Finance is examine a tax on vacant homes.
The Central Statistics Office indicates that there are around 5,100 vacant residential properties in Kildare.
The move has been welcomed by the Peter McVerry Trust, which operates Kildare's homelessness services.
It says " From our extensive research in Dublin, Kildare and Limerick we have come across a large cohort of property owners who are simply sitting on vacant buildings, rather than putting them back into use. An empty homes tax would not only penalise such behaviour, but more importantly would be likely to encourage owners of vacant properties to reuse the buildings rather than face a new tax."
