Construction of a new bridge over the Liffey in Celbridge could be seven to 10 years away.
Councillors were informed of the potential timeline by the county's Senior Engineer at the April meeting of the Celbridge/Leixlip Municipal District.
A feasibility study on the bridge, needed to cope with a significant increase in traffic volumes, was published last August.
The bridge could cost in the region of €30 million to construct.
