: 05/16/2019 - 10:50

The proportion of babies in Ireland  born with a low birth-weight has increased by 20 percent, according to a study by the WHO and Unicef.

The number of newborns in Ireland weighing less than 5.5 pounds has risen from 2,800 in the year 2000 to 4,000 in the year 2015.

The study has revealed that 1 in 7 babies in the world are born with a low birthweight, making them at greater risk from chronic conditions in later life, like diabetes and heart disease.
