Tues pm Sport: As O'Neill Resigns, Search for Successor Begins; Ross Calls on FAI President to Withdraw Nomination

: 07/16/2019 - 17:27

Cian O’Neill has stepped down as manager of the Kildare senior footballers.

The county board confirmed his resignation in a statement today.

The statement can be viewed on this website and our twitter @kfmsport

The search for a new manager will now begin.  Among those tipped for the position include former stars Glenn Ryan and Anthony Rainbow – both with previous management experience; Niall Carew who managed Sligo and Waterford; present selector Tom Cribbin who’s managed Laois, Westmeath and the Kildare U21’s and, of course, former All Ireland U20 winning manager, currently Sarsfields manager DAvy Burke who indicated a wish to be part of the senior management team previously, but which did not happen.

Prior to Cian O’Neill’s appointment, it was being widely predicted that Glenn Ryan had the job.  He subsequently managed Longford successfully.

The EMS Copiers Senior Football League Div 1 Semi Final between Sarsfields and Naas has been fixed for St. Conleth’s Park next Sunday at 3.45.

The other semi final Carbury V Moorefield is in St. Conleth’s on Saturday at 5:45,

One fixture tonight:
Joe Fox Tool and Plant Hire Reserve B Football Championship: Kilcock V St. Laurence's at 8pm

Everton have signed midfielder Fabian Delph from Manchester City on a three-year deal.

The 29-year-old England international, who joined City from Aston Villa in 2015, joins for an undisclosed fee.

Kieran Trippier is on the verge of a 20-million pound move to Atletico Madrid.

The Tottenham right-back has been given permission to speak with the La Liga club ahead of medical.
Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross has written to FAI president Donal Conway to ask him to withdraw his nomination to be re-elected in the role this weekend.

Donal Conway has been nominated unopposed by AGM members of the FAI to continue in the role of president.

Ross claims that "the process for the upcoming election falls short of the transparency and democracy which we would expect of an organisation seeking to implement good governance practices."

The Minister references a meeting Conway attended with him, along with Minister of State Brendan Griffin in Leinster House on 22 May in which the FAI president reiterated a previous commitment to stand down at the AGM.
Today’s racing is in Killarney from 5.50
