Weds Lunch Sport: Who Will Succeed O'Neill; Sport Ireland Supports Minister's FAI Stance

Following Cian O’Neill’s decision yesterday to step away as manager of the Kildare senior footballers, the search for a new manager will now begin.  

Among those tipped for the position include former stars Glenn Ryan and Anthony Rainbow – both with previous management experience; Niall Carew who managed Sligo and Waterford; current selector Tom Cribbin who’s managed Laois, Westmeath and the Kildare U21’s and former All Ireland U20 winning manager Davy Burke.

Former Monaghan manager Dominic O’Rourke, former Kildare selector under Kieran McGeeney, Aidan O’Rourke, along with Kerry’s Jack O’Connor are external names being mentioned.

Sport Ireland has "no difficulty" with Minister for Sport Shane Ross's statement regarding the position of the president of the Football Association of Ireland

Speaking at the Oireachtas Sports Committee, Kieran Mulvey said Sport Ireland agreed with the minister's views.

Members of Sport Ireland are appearing before the Oireachtas Committee on Sport regarding the governance review of the FAI.

Social Democrat North Kildare TD Catherine Murphy also called on the Oireachtas committee to write to the FAI to insist that members of the Soccer Writers' of Ireland and

the Association of Sports Journalists be admitted to the FAI's AGM this month.

In his opening statment to the Committee, John Treacy, Chief Executive of Sports Ireland told members that they understood the ongoing investigation into matters relating to the FAI by the Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement (ODCE) "is serious and will be very substantial".

He told the committee that a decision to restore funding will only be considered when the structures, controls and governance arrangements in place within the FAI are appropriate,".
Newcastle have confirmed Steve Bruce will take over as their new head coach.

He leaves Sheffield Wednesday to replace Rafa Benitez on a three-year contract.

In tonight's second leg first qualifying round in the Champions League, Dundalk need to score away to Riga to progress following last week's scoreless draw at Oriel Park.

Kick off in Riga is at 6.30.

Celtic's progress to the second qualifying round meanwhile should be a formality.

They hold a 3-1 lead over FK Sarajevo going into tonight's second leg at Parkhead at 7.45.

Frankie Dettori makes his debut and has four rides in today’s racing in Killarney from 5.55pm.
