The main contract for the €30 million Athy Southern Distributor Road project is expected to go to tender before the end of April.
The road, first mooted in the '70s, is designed to funnel chronic traffic congestion out of the town centre.
It is expected to be open by 2022.
Kildare County Council says advance works are underway on the site at the moment, including diverting a gas main between the Carlow Road and the Railway Bridge
KCC says it expects to appoint a main contractor in September.
