Defamation laws are a having a ‘crippling effect’ on the freedom of the press.

That’s according to the Press Ombudsman Peter Feeney who says that nothing is being done to reduce the disproportionate amounts awarded in court.

He was speaking at the launch of the Press council of Ireland’s annual report which found that 330 complaints were made about the press in 2017, up from 26 the year before.
