Plans to convict Donald Trump over rioting at the US Capitol building, nearly 3 weeks ago, take a step forward this evening.

Impeachment articles charging him with "inciting insurrection" will be carried to the Senate in a rare, ceremonial walk.

Outside, thousands of National Guard soldiers will be on duty to protect the building, which is still fenced off over fears of more violence.

It is unlikely Mr. Trump will be found guilty, and people in Washington DC disagree on whether the trial should even be happening:
