There’s already been some high profile casualties in the Seanad elections as counting prepares to resume this morning.
Former Fine Gael TD Tom Neville has failed to win a seat and the party’s outgoing Senator Gabrielle McFadden has lost hers.
Former Fianna Fáil TD Declan Breathnach has also lost his bid for a seat in the upper house on the Cultural and Education panel.
This morning the Green Party’s Saoirse McHugh needs a big transfer to keep her ahead of former Fianna Fáil TDs Malcolm Byrne or Margaret Murphy O’Mahony.
But it’s likely the elimination of one of them will elect the other at the expense of the Green Party candidate.
