Police in England say a toddler has lost her life in the most "unimaginably terrible circumstances" after she was killed by a dog at her home in St Helens, Merseyside.
17-month old Bella-Rae Birch died in hospital, yesterday after she was attacked by the dog at approximately 3.50pm, yesterday.
The pet dog had been in the family for one week.
Police officers are searching for the dog's history, and trying to locate the previous owners.
They have confirmed the dog has been put down.
Merseyside Police Superintendent Steve Brizell has addressed the media:
