Vote of 5-4
The US Supreme Court has refused to block a law in Texas that bans abortions for most women.
By a vote of 5-4, Supreme Court Justices denied the emergency request.
One of the 6 conservative judges, Chief Justice John Roberts, joined the 3 liberal Justices in dissenting.
This means women will be prohibited from making the choice, once a heartbeat is detected - which is usually around six weeks - and before most women know they are pregnant.
The law is the strictest against abortion rights in the United States, since the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, in 1973.
The law was signed by Texas Governor, Gregg Abbott in May.
At least 12 other states have enacted bans in early pregnancy, but this is the first time Judges have allowed the law to come into effect.
Last night, US Vice President Kamala Harris tweeted, "Biden-Harris Administration will always fight to protect access to healthcare and defend a woman’s right to make decisions about her body and determine her future."
Today, a new law takes effect in Texas that directly violates the precedent established in the landmark case of Roe v. Wade. This all-out assault on reproductive health effectively bans abortion for the nearly 7 million Texans of reproductive age.https://t.co/ZQTPMEOBxb
