The figures relate to the period of 1st January 2020 to 31st December 2021
New figures from the World Health Organisation reveal the number of people who died - directly or indirectly due to the Covid-19 pandemic, between the 1st of January 2020 and 31 December 2021 - was approximately 14.9 million.
The figures confirm the global death toll was higher for men than for women, and higher among older adults.
Globally, the number of new Covid-19 cases and deaths has continued to decrease, since the end of March 2022.
During the week 2nd - 8th of May, over 3.5 million cases of the virus, and more than 12,000 deaths were reported - as compared to the previous week.
However, an increase in the number of new weekly cases was reported from the Region of the America, and the African Region.
As of 8th May 2022, over514 million confirmed infections, and over six million deaths were reported globally.
The figures point to the need for all countries to invest in more resilient health systems, that can sustain essential health services during crises.
