One private nursing home in Kilcock received almost €900,000 under a Government scheme providing funds to cope with Covid-19 and the management of outbreaks, new Health Service Executive (HSE) figures show.
While three private nursing homes each received over €1 million under a Government scheme.
In total, the HSE paid €135.8 million to 455 private nursing homes under the State’s temporary assistance payment scheme (Taps) from its introduction in April 2020 until the start of last month.
The scheme was introduced by the then Minister for Health, Simon Harris, to support private and voluntary nursing homes coping with additional costs due to the pandemic.
Nursing homes that received the money used it to cover the cost of paying agency staff to cover employees who were out sick with Covid or isolating.
It was also used for infection prevention and control measures to protect against the spread of Covid-19 and the higher cost of responding to outbreaks.
The funding provided under the scheme ended at the end of June 2021 but was extended until the end of this month specifically to assist in the management of outbreaks.
