The data has been released by the Dept. of Education.
At least 3,870 children in Co. Kildare are being taught in overcrowded classrooms.
These are classes of 30, or more, pupils.
The Minister for Education responding to a parliamentary question by Sinn Féin TD, Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire, says there were 129 such classes in schools throughout the county in the 2020/2021 academic year.
Only 4 other local authority areas, in Cork City, Meath, South Dublin and Dublin City, have higher numbers of over-crowded classes.
Joe McKeown is President of the Irish National Teachers' Organisation.
