Whitmore emphasised the necessity of adequate sporting facilities for Blessington's expanding community.
Social Democrats TD for Wicklow Jennifer Whitmore is backing Blessington's plea for a multi-use sports complex, advocated by local clubs and community groups.
Whitmore emphasised the necessity of adequate sporting facilities for Blessington's expanding community and highlighted the current deficiencies faced by sports clubs.
She said: “At present the community in Blessington and the surrounding areas do not have access to the sporting facilities needed by their growing sports clubs. Blessington AFC, with a membership of over 700 people, have long outgrown their facilities which are located just over the Wicklow/Kildare border in Crosschapel."
She added: "Blessington Rugby FC split their training between the nearby Russborough House and Naas but do not currently have a dedicated home. The Lakeshore Striders running club have limited access to a shared running track at Blessington Community College and the Community Pool for West Wicklow committee continue to campaign for the development of a swimming pool in the district."
Deirdre McCormack, Social Democrats Local Election Candidate, also stressed the urgency of the proposal, particularly for children and young athletes.
Whitmore urged inclusion of the complex in the Blessington Local Area Plan, emphasising its potential to boost sports participation and club growth.
The public can submit feedback on the Blessington Local Area Plan until April 3rd, 2024.
