Ciaran Donovan was sentenced at Naas District Court

The operator of an illegal TV streaming service has been sentenced to 16 months in prison for possessing over €900,000 in criminal proceeds from the business.

Ciaran Donovan, 42, a married father of four from Ashfield, Kildare Town, pleaded guilty to three charges of possessing the proceeds of crime contrary to the Criminal Justice (Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing) Act 2010.

Donovan ran King Kong Media, which provided illegal TV streaming by selling access codes for pay TV channels like Sky Sports and BT Sports.

Following an investigation initiated by Sky TV's anti-piracy unit, Donovan pleaded guilty to possessing €470,511 that had passed through King Kong Media's bank accounts between January 2016 and March 2022.

Earlier this month, Donovan also admitted to possessing €239,989 in a bank account and €191,009 transferred to another account between October 5, 2021, and November 14, 2023.

Judge Martina Baxter sentenced Donovan to three years and four months for what she described as an "extensive and sophisticated" operation.

However, she suspended the final two years for 30 months on the condition that Donovan refrains from engaging in any illegal TV streaming activities upon his release.
