"Even A Small Increase, I don't care, Once We Got Something" - Local Taxi Driver Says Fares Should Increase

William Tracey, a Naas-based taxi driver, said the cost of everything has gone up.

A local taxi driver said he agrees with proposed fare increases for taxis.

The National Transport Authority has recommended putting up prices.

A review found the cost of operating a cab has jumped by 9 per cent in the last two years, and says fares should reflect this.

The research also found a slight drop in the number of people who say they use taxis, while the main reason to get a cab was for social reasons.

William Tracey, a Naas-based taxi driver, said the cost of everything has gone up.

He said he is not against an increase in taxi fares, even if it's just five or six percent.

"I mean, that's too much, I know that is too much, but if we've got some kind of a rate, even 5%, I don't care, we've got something. I mean, we could run a car before for maybe 100 or 150 euro a week, we can't do it now. I do agree, very much agree, with this. We're low enough at the moment," he said.

He said, however, that taxi drivers will have to fork out to change their meters to reflect the increase.

He said it could cost over €100 to change it and seal it.
