Locals are being targeted by an online scam targeting buyers of handmade crafts in the run up to Christmas.
In one case uncovered by Kfm, a Facebook scammer, claiming to be based in Kildare, is passing off the work of a well-known York-based sculptor.

The fraudulent seller, operating under the name "Joanne Boxley," is posing as a creator of handcrafted sculptures.
Posing as a potential buyer, Kfm enquired about the artwork, only to be told that a deposit would be required.
The scammer says the deposit is needed for materials.
When asked if the items can be viewed in person, the scammer says they have sold all their artwork.
Once a deposit is payed, however, they say they can secure the materials and have the artwork turned around within 8 days.
Kfm queried why the sculptures were selling at a discounted rate.
The scammer justified the prices saying they are trying to build a portfolio.
Unsuspecting buyers are then directed to Revolut, where they add the card details of the seller's "friend" who "sources" the materials.
However, the "friend's" location is Ukraine.

Using reverse image search tools, Kfm determined that the original artwork belongs to a respected York-based sculptor whose reputation is built on handmade pieces.
Some of the York artist's work sells for as much as €800 , while the scammer is selling there's for as little as €100.
When questioned further, the scammer dodged inquiries, resorting to vague reassurances and increasing pressure with messages like, "Are you doing the deposit now?"
Kfm reached out to the York artist, who said people travel long distances to view her work before buying.
They said scammers are making it extremely "difficult" for small businesses to advertise on social media.
They said they have experienced the issue before and have reported the latest scam.
