Gardaí are appealing for information after a potentially live military ordnance round, initially discovered by a member of the public on the Kildare-Wicklow border has gone missing.
According to a statement issued to Kfm by An Garda Siochana, the item in question is an 84mm illumination round, weighing 3.1kg and approximately 12 inches in length.
It was reportedly seen partially buried near a public walking trail on Lugnaquilla, within the Glen of Imaal area.
According to Óglaigh na hÉireann, this location falls within a clearly marked 'Range Danger Area' near the Glen of Imaal Artillery Range, as outlined on military.ie.
These 84mm illumination rounds, typically white in colour, are used by the military to light up areas during night operations and have a shelf life of up to 10 years.
When initially spotted, the round appeared to have been in the ground for some time.
However, a subsequent search of the area failed to locate it, leading Gardaí to believe it may have been removed.
Authorities warn the ordnance may still contain explosive material and poses a serious “explosive and incendiary risk” to the public.
Gardaí are urging anyone with information to avoid handling the device and to immediately contact them by calling 999 or 112.
