Housing Minister Considering Extending Rent Pressure Zone To Cover Entire Country

The whole of Co. Kildare is currently a rent pressure zone

The Minister for Housing says he is considering extending Rent Pressure Zones to cover the entire country.

Currently 24% of the country is not a rent pressure zone, meaning rents can increase at the same rate as inflation.

But for those living within zones - which the whole of Co. Kildare is - rents cannot increase by more than 2%.

Darragh O'Brien says he is seeking legal advice to extend the zones further, but that supply is the biggest issue:

Minister O'Brien says the supply of new homes should meet demand sometime around 2024.

He does however note issues will likely continue due to the pent up demand in the system due to the pandemic.

Building shutdowns caused by the pandemic meant fewer homes than needed were built over the last two years.

The Minister says building is set to ramp up strongly in the coming years:
