Its Executive Council met on Wednesday to reiteratesr solidarity with the people of Palestine.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has  reiterated its positions that Palestinians in Gaza and the Occupied Territories face persecution and denial of human rights by an occupying power in breach of international law.

Fighting has been ongoing between Hamas and Israel for over 10 days.

Over 220 Palestinian people, including 63 children, have been killed.

12 people in Israel have died.

'Intensive talks' are said to be under way to agree a ceasefire.

Officials from the Palestinian Hamas group believe it could happen in a 'day or so.'

Israel's Prime Minister claims military's going to 'unprecedented lengths' to prevent civilian casualties.

ICTU says "We abhor the loss of life on all sides in recent days.   What is happening is not a conflict of equals but rather a government with one of the most powerful armies in the world inflicting terror on the 2 million people of Gaza – the most densely populated area in the world.  Gazans have nowhere to flee. "

Yvonne O'Callaghan is Chair of ICTU's Global Solidarity Committee.

She joined Clem Ryan, and latterly, Eoin Beatty, on Thursday's edition of Kildare Today:
