Kildare Fire Service Safety Officer Advises Public On Christmas Fire Hazards

File image: Rolling News

Ensure real Christmas trees are kept watered throughout the period to keep moisture

Smoke alarms are the "core" of the fire service's safety campaigns, that's according to Kildare Fire Service's, Fire Safety Officer.

Chanel Ryan noted the importance of testing one's smoke alarms.

Ms. Ryan also highlighted the dangers of candles, "a huge source of concern" to the fire service.

Ensure they are never left unattended, not left on or near surfaces that could catch fires, or near Christmas trees this time of year.

She encourages people to purchase LED/electrical candles.

In regards to Christmas trees, in particular real trees, ensure you keep them in a water stand, as they become highly flammable once dried out.

Artificial wise, they can't dry out, but ensure your purchase comes with a CE mark & keep the tree away from heat sources.

Also ensure Christmas tree lights are CE certified.

Keep the Christmas decorations away from heat sources, with particular note on stockings do not hang them by a real fire.
