Inspection carried out by the Mental Health Commisison
The Lakeview Unit, at Naas General Hospital achieved 80% compliance on the inspection – a decrease of 3% compared to its 2020 inspection, that's according to the Mental Health Commission.
Today the commission published an inspection report, that included four critical and six high non-compliances at two inpatient mental health centres in Naas & Cork.
At the time of Lakeview's inspection, 23 people were resident in the unit.
After inspection, 7 non-compliances were recorded - one of which was a critical risk.
The centre achieved 80% compliance on inspection, a decrease of 3% compared to 2020.
According to the report, "The centre was rated critical for premises as residents did not have adequate access to personal space."
"The centre was not in breach of any of the conditions but was non-compliant with the associated regulations; two related to premises and one related to staff training."
The commission "initiated an escalation process for the critical risk identified during this inspection. The approved centre was required to take immediate steps to address the non-compliances in premises. The service responded, providing evidence and assurances of the actions which they implemented."
Following a report by MHC, published in March 2021, it was found the unit was "not fit for purpose".
Capital planning to replace the unit is currently underway.
The unit has 29 beds, which was deemed insufficient to fulfill the needs of the population in the area.
The Lakeview Unit in Naas General Hospital is registered for 29 beds.
