Newly Elected Newbridge Cllr Tom McDonnell Defends Women Need To "Breed More" Comments, Citing Farming Background

McDonnell, a builder from Newbridge, last night claimed the Irish were in danger of dying out because Irish women were not breeding enough.

"I'm from a farming background."

Independent Cllr Tom McDonnell, elected last night in the Newbridge LEA, has defended remarks he made about women needing to breed more.

McDonnell, a builder from Newbridge, last night claimed the Irish were in danger of dying out because Irish women were not breeding enough.

Last night he said: "It's all about the women of Ireland. If we don't have women breeding, we die out as a breed and we don't want that to happen."

Defending the remarks this morning on Kildare Today, he said he is from a farming background and that's the language he uses.

Tom said he is concerned about school places in the area.

He also said Ireland needs to control immigration to ensure there are enough services for available for local people.

He said there is a difference between controlled immigration and anti-immigration.

He said people are being forced out of Ireland due to high rents.

He said he is not far-right.

After 5 days of counting and recounting, the final 3 seats in the Newbridge LEA were confirmed last night.

Noel Heavey and Rob Power of Fianna Fáil took the 4th and 5th seats respectively, while Independent Tom McDonnell took the final seat.

Melissa Byrne of Aontu was eliminated, so it left James Stokes of Sinn Fein and McDonnell to battle it out for the 6th seat.

McDonnell was already 62 votes ahead of Stokes prior to the transfer of Byrne’s votes and he went on to extend his lead, to eventually get elected.
