Planned Power Outage At Ferns Bridge In Monasterevin On One Of Coldest Days Of Year Sparks Outrage

One resident said she can't understand why power would be cut on one of the coldest days of the year.

Residents in Ferns Bridge in Monasterevin have been contacting Kfm over a planned power outage to facilitate works at a new housing development.

One resident said she can't understand why power would be cut on one of the coldest days of the year.

She said her daughter has a small baby and is extremely "stressed" over the situation.

It's understood that ESB had planned to carry out the work recently but were not in a position to do so due to Storm Darragh.

Listeners who contacted Kfm said they have small children and that families are in a state of "disbelief" over the timing of the planned outage.

They said elderly people will also be expected to stay home with no heating.

One local resident, Stephanie, has been forced to travel up to Dublin with her four-month-old baby and three-year-old toddler.

She said she has had to brave icy roads to get to the capital because she can't stay in a house with no electricity or heating.

In a statement to Kfm, a spokesperson for ESB said works will still go ahead today, but crews will "endeavour to complete the works earlier than 4pm".

"The planned essential maintenance during daytime hours (9am to 4pm) today in Monasterevin will proceed to facilitate the connection of 20 housing units. These works were planned in December but were delayed due to crews and contractors being redeployed due to Storm Darragh.  The 358 customers impacted were notified by post in the past number of weeks," the spokesperson said.

They added: "We appreciate the disruption that this planned outage will cause to impacted customers, and our crews will endeavour to complete the works earlier than 4pm.  The works will make live the electricity connections to facilitate local families move into their new homes."

When asked about a planned outage in Killina in Carbury tomorrow, the spokesperson said "in broad terms, the planned outages scheduled will go ahead as they're generally essential work".

Cllr Kevin Duffy (FG) said Monasterevin Community Centre has welcomed anyone impacted by the power outage to drop in to the community centre if it is possible to do so.

He said the "heating is on, they have warm spaces, access to hot water for tea and coffee and access to WiFi".

Meanwhile, Met Eireann is warning of widespread frost and hazardous travelling conditions as an Orange Warning for almost the entire country expires.

A yellow low temperature and ice warning is in place until 6pm, when it will be upgraded to an orange warning again until tomorrow morning.

A weather station in Mullingar recorded a temperature of minus six point one overnight, while Casement Aerodrome in Dublin recorded minus five point nine.
