Revealed: Ukrainians Face Eviction From The Avon As Provider Shifts Focus To International Protection Applicants

The Department of Integration acknowledged the disruption caused by relocations but said that state-funded accommodation under the Temporary Protection Directive was always intended to be temporary.

Kfm can reveal that the provider at The Avon in Blessington has expressed interest in offering accommodation for international protection applicants following the termination of its current arrangement for Ukrainian residents.

Ukrainians living on site received termination notices this week.

While efforts are being made to offer follow-on accommodation to displaced Ukrainians, logistical challenges mean moves may result in people being relocated far from their current homes.

According to the Department of Integration, a vacancy mapping exercise is underway to identify nearby options.

A spokesperson highlighted the need to balance providing for those fleeing the conflict in Ukraine and other regions of oppression while ensuring state resources are used effectively.

"At the same time, the need for accommodation for International Protection applicants is increasing and experiencing significant shortages, with over 3,000 people left without an offer of accommodation in 2024," a spokesperson for the Department said.

Additionally, Ukrainians are encouraged to explore private housing through government programs like the “Offer a Home” scheme or by securing rental properties independently.

The Department acknowledged the disruption caused by relocations but said that state-funded accommodation under the Temporary Protection Directive was always intended to be temporary.

Medical needs assessed by the HSE are the only criteria being prioritised during reallocation.

Despite these efforts, the changes have sparked frustration and anxiety among those affected by the looming relocations.

This comes as Ukrainian residents protested outside Carlow County Council yesterday afternoon, calling for an extension on their stay at a former restaurant just outside Castledermot.

The former Toughers Restaurant was converted to accommodation in 2022.

Fire safety concerns were raised in mid-December, however the 170 residents secured an extension on their stay until January 31st.

Olha Chorna has been a resident there since it opened - she says they only had one month's notice to find alternative accommodation.
