Speaking on Kildare Today, local woman Louise said the eating disorder damaged her daughter's heart.
The mother of a teenager who was diagnosed with an eating disorder at the age of 13 said a discussion about calories in her Home Economics class was one trigger for her daughter's anorexia.
Speaking on Kildare Today, local woman "Louise" (name changed to protect identity) said the eating disorder damaged her daughter's heart.
She shared the story as part of Eating Disorders Awareness Week.
There are just three beds in the country catering to individuals struggling with an eating disorder.
Louise said an eating disorder is "not a choice" it's a "coping mechanism".
She said her daughter was impacted by a bereavement, the Covid pandemic and a change of school.
Her daughter was placed on bed rest in hospital and required full monitoring to ensure her organs recovered.
Initially, the family had consultant support but no eating disorder bed.
They were dealt with in a general children's hospital
Following discharge from hospital, there were still no beds available.
The recovery became the responsibility of the family at home, with support from an eating disorder unit in Cherry Orchard.
Louise said her daughter, now aged 17, is coping well today but she will always "worry" about her.
