The Irish Witness Security Programme was set up in 1996.

Ireland's Witness Security Programme is not underpinned by any legislation.

It was established in 1996, in the wake of the murder of journalist, Veronica Guerin.

IWSP may involve the provision of State police protection, impunity from prosecution, transport to a new locality, provision of a new identity,  to any bystander and/or accomplice willing to testify against the accused(s), someone who is often a former compatriot.

Attempts were made in 2007 enact a legislative framework for the programme, by then Kildare TD, Sean Power.

Aaron Harte-Hughes is a PhD student and Graduate-Teaching Scholarship recipient at Maynooth University Department of Law.

His doctoral research examines the law relating to Witness Protection in Ireland.

He joined Clem Ryan on Thursday's edition of Kildare Today.
