Unsuitable Practices Relating To Medication Administration Highlighted At Naas General Hospital's Lakeview Unit

According to the Mental Health Commission, the Unit's overall compliance for 2023 was 83% - down from 86% in 2022.

Lakeview Unit at Naas General Hospital has been criticised for not implementing appropriate and suitable practices relating to the administration of medicines to residents.

Its latest inspection report highlighted issues with the centre's seclusion room, fire safety and lack of training for staff involved in physical restraint.

According to the Mental Health Commission, the Unit's overall compliance for 2023 was 83% - down from 86% in 2022.

On the day of inspection, the mental health unit had 29 registered beds with 27 residents present.

The report stated that the Unit's seclusion room was not designed to withstand high levels of violence with damage remedied with perspex. In some areas, staples were noted to hold the wall lining in place.

The inspection said the seclusion room did not have an anti-barricade door.

With regard to the building, it noted that the centre "was not kept in a good state of repair, internally or externally."

It said the courtyard on level one was dirty and littered with cigarette butts.

The wood veneer to window ledges in bedrooms and group rooms was chipped.

There was graffiti on chairs on the lower floor and in the courtyard.

Walls, curtains and windows across the unit were stained.

It said although new flooring had been installed on the upper corridor, damaged flooring was observed in the TV rooms, recreational rooms and bedrooms.

In relation to care and treatment, each resident had an individual care plan (ICP); however, not every ICP was appropriately completed.

One ICP was not reviewed by the multi-disciplinary team and five ICPs were not updated following seclusion or physical restraint debriefs.

Staff involved in physical restraint had not undertaken appropriate training.

In addition, not all staff had received mandatory training in fire safety, basic life support and the management of violence and aggression.

The report noted, however, that service users reported being happy with the care they received at Lakeview Unit, praising the activities and occupational therapy team.

They appreciated the information provided on medications and addiction support.

Access to music, Netflix, and other entertainment on personal devices was enjoyed by many.

The food was frequently complimented for its taste and accommodation of special dietary needs.
