The new planes, CASA C295s, will monitor Irish coast's to detect illegal activities

A new plane for monitoring Irish waters is being unveiled today.

It's among two new additions to the Air Corps' fleet.

At the end of 2019, two new planes were signed off on by the then Junior Minsiter for Defence, Paul Kehoe.

The planes are to replace the current fleet of CASA CN235s which were bought in 1994.

The new planes, CASA C295s, will monitor Irish coast's to detect illegal activities or security threats in our waters.

They'll provide maritime surveillance along with the capability for air ambulance missions, medical evacuations, search and rescue or transport for troops where the need arises.

The first of the two new planes is going to be unveiled today in Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel, where the Tanaiste and Minister for Defence Micheal Martin will make a speech.
