A relative of Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch has been jailed for eight years for stabbing a doctor during an attempted robbery in Dublin.

31-year-old Christopher Coakley, with an address at Empress Place, Dublin 1, was initially charged with attempted murder.

The attempted murder charge against Christopher Coakley was dropped by the DPP after he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of assault causing serious harm.

On the 28th of January 2021, he knocked a doctor off his eScooter as he was making his way home from work.

When the doctor tried to make a run for it, Coakley followed him and then repeatedly stabbed him with a scissors.

The two men had never met before that night.

Coakley has a long criminal record and has been in and out of prison since he was a teenager. He has also struggled with alcohol and drug addiction.

He was handed a nine-year prison sentence today with the final twelve months suspended.
