24 lactation consultant posts are being created to provide breastfeeding support in the country's maternity units.
Over €1.5 million of funding is being allocated to the HSE to provide for the specialists across hospital and community settings.
Health Minister Stephen Donnelly says Ireland has to increase its breastfeeding rates to improve child and maternal health, and reduce childhood obesity.
