EU Prepares Response As US Tariffs Threaten Irish Economy

20% levy on EU goods take effect on April 9th

The European Commission has warned of severe economic consequences after US President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs on imports, including a 20% levy on EU goods.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the move a major blow to global trade, warning that businesses across Europe—including Ireland—will face higher costs. She said the EU is ready to negotiate but is also finalizing countermeasures if talks fail.

Irish businesses exporting to the US, particularly in sectors like pharmaceuticals and agri-food, could be significantly impacted. The European Commission has vowed to protect EU industries from the fallout, with further details on its response expected in the coming days.

The Tanaiste, Simon Harris expects there will be US tariffs on pharmaceuticals down the line.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also criticized the tariffs, calling for urgent talks to prevent a damaging trade war.
