Homes and businesses could soon be asked avoid using electricity during peak times.
It comes as four electricity system 'amber' alerts were issued so far this month.
The plan on energy reduction is set to be issued by the country's energy watchdog- the Commission for Energy regulation- in the coming weeks.
Around 2 million homes and small businesses across the country are expected to be asked to avoid 'peak-time-use according to the Examiner.
The measures will also include tariffs on large industries during peak times, to mitigate the risk of shortages during the winter months.
To date this month, four electricity system 'amber' alerts were issued by Ireland's power grid operator.
The drastic measures will be taken early to avoid winter blackouts and brownouts, however the Finance Minister told the paper they're hopeful it wont come to that if these measures are implemented early.
