A man who took part in a joint enterprise which led to a businessman begging to be shot by his attackers, has been jailed for two years for his role in what happened.
William Twomey, from Havelock Place, Warrenpoint, Co Down, tried to put a stop to what he had initiated but the court wasn’t satisfied he did enough.
Our Courts Correspondent Frank Greaney reports:
Edward McAndrew, a businessman from Co Mayo, travelled to a hotel in Dundalk on December 2nd 2017.
The court heard he had been in email contact with someone about the purchase of some machinery and had arranged for a viewing on that date.
When he arrived, he was told to follow a car from the hotel, but as it turned out, it was all a ruse to get him to a remote location near the border where he was attacked by a gang of men with iron bars, who demanded £50,000 from him.
It later emerged that William Twomey was the one who lured him to the hotel.
He was found guilty of assault causing harm, robbery and demanding money with menace and was jailed today for two years.
Given his background as a successful businessman, the judges described his conviction and sentence as a “significant fall from grace” and also noted his attempt to put a stop to what he had initiated, although they refused to accept that he did enough to warrant a full defence.
