Police in Northern Ireland have launched an investigation
Three men are continuing to be questioned in connection with the shooting of PSNI Detective Chief Inspector, John Caldwell, in Omagh, Co Tyrone, last night.
Police arrested the three men aged 38, 45 and 47 under the Terrorism Act in Omagh and Coalisland on Thursday morning, in connection with the attempted murder and they are currently being questioned by detectives in Musgrave Serious Crime Suite.
The senior officer was shot in front of his young son after an under-15 football session at a sports complex on the Killyclogher Road.
He's fighting for his life in hospital this afternoon.
It's understood two masked gunmen attacked the officer as he coached an underage football team.
The victim was rushed to hospital in Derry by ambulance were his condition is described as critical but stable.
Gardaí also say they are Co-operating with the PSNI and have intensified patrolling along the border.
Omagh has seen many atrocities over the years.
In April 2011, PSNI officer Ronan Kerr was killed by a booby-trap car bomb planted outside his home in Omagh.
While on August 15th 1998, twenty-nine people died in the Omagh bombing.
An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar commented:"I have heard the terrible news from Omagh about the shooting of an off duty PSNI officer tonight.
"The shooting of a PSNI officer in Omagh is utterly deplorable and completely shocking to people across this island, all the more so as it took place in the presence of young people.
"My first thoughts this evening are with the officer, his family and police colleagues as well with as the health professionals in Altnagelvin Hospital.
"I’ve been briefed by the Garda Commissioner and An Garda Síochána are of course providing all possible support to their PSNI colleagues. I remain in close contact with them," he concluded.
