The southern province lost their Heineken Champions Cup clash at Thomond Park by 18 points to 13.

Elsewhere, Ulster head coach Dan McFarland refused to blame their travel difficulties for a hefty loss to Sale.

The visitors shipped a 39-nil defeat to the Premiership club in Salford.

Due to cancelled flights, Ulster only arrived in Manchester on the morning of the game.


GAELIC GAMES

Glen are Ulster club football champions for the first time.

The Derry men were 1-12 to 1-6 winners over Down's Kilcoo in yesterday's final in Armagh.

Alex Doherty scored a late goal to seal the win for Malachy O'Rourke's side.

Glen will play Moycullen in the All-Ireland semi-finals in the new year.


ATHLETICS

Team Ireland claimed a total of five medals at the European Cross Country Championships in Turin yesterday.

In the men's under-20 race, Nick Griggs won silver with Dean Casey taking bronze.

In the team event at under-20 level, Ireland took silver.

The women's team won bronze, with the men's under-23 team also finishing third.

SOCCER

Katie McCabe was on the scoresheet for Arsenal in the Women's Super League yesterday.

The Gunners were 4-1 winners over Aston Villa to move up to second in the table.

Chelsea lead the way following a 3-2 win over Reading.

Elsewhere, Manchester City and Manchester United played out a 1-all draw.

And West Ham had a 2-nil win over Tottenham.


HOCKEY

The Irish women's team face a must-win match at the Nations Cup later this morning.

Sean Dancer's side face Italy from 9.45am, knowing a victory is needed to maintain their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

Ireland suffered a 2-nil first-round loss to Spain yesterday in Valencia.


SNOOKER

Ken Doherty is in first round action at the English Open tonight.

He goes up against Jamie Jones of Wales at the Brentwood Centre this evening.

At lunchtime, Gerard Greene takes on John Higgins for a place in the first round.

And tonight Mark Allen meets Mitchell Mann.

All matches are the best of seven frames.


RACING
