Republic of Ireland midfielder Mikey Johnston believes that they can still qualify for next year's European Championships.

Stephen Kenny's side picked up their first win in qualifying last night with a 3-0 win over Gibraltar.

Johnston came off the bench to score Ireland's first goal, and he says they remain positive about their prospects.

Next up for Ireland is a meeting with France on September 7th, before the visit of the Netherlands to Dublin three days later.

The French are 6 points clear at the top of Group B, after their 1-0 win over Greece last night.

Chelsea have confirmed the arrival of France international Christopher Nkunku.

The 25-year-old forward joins on a six-year contract from RB Leipzig in a deal worth around 60-million euro.

It's Mauricio Pochettino's first signing since taking charge at Stamford Bridge.

Nkunku also had four years at PSG, where he won three league titles.

Sharlene Mawdsley has recorded the second fastest time of her career in the women's 400 metres on day one of the European Team Championships in Poland.

The Tipperary native clocked a time of 51-point-55 seconds in Poland.


In the men's 400-metres, Jack Raftery finished in third.

Former world tennis number two Anett Kontaveit says she'll be retiring after Wimbledon due to a back condition.

The Estonian - who reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in 2020 - has lumbar disc degeneration.

27-year-old Kontaveit said she's "ready for new challenges".
